History

1969

Charnwood Community Relations Council, known as 'The Garden - Where Good Things Grow' opened in Church Gate. Wendy Blair was appointed Community Relations Officer.

1970

English Language Programme launched at The Garden.

1975

The Toy Bus was kitted out to offer constructive indoor play for families 

1975 – 2014

Advice work began funded by Leicestershire County Council.

1979

The Horticultural/Asian Vegetable Project began to grow vegetables essential in the South Asian diet. 

1985

The English Language Programme moved to a mobile classroom at Cobden School.

1991

We moved to new premises on Nottingham Road.

1996

The Garden became Charnwood Race Equality Council. Funded by the Commission for Racial Equality (now known as the Equality & Human Rights Commission)

1998 - 2003

The Employment Advice Project was set up to help young people and unemployed adults to enter education and employment.

2000

East Midlands Race Equality Council (EMREC) was founded to encourage collaboration among the Race Equality Councils (RECs) in Leicester, Peterborough, Derby, Nottingham, Wellingborough and Charnwood.

2006 – 2018

Erasmus Plus (funded by the British Council), offered annual residential training events for young people across Europe.

2008

Charnwood Race Equality Council became Human Rights & Equalities Charnwood to include wider equalities, not just racial minorities

2010 – 2021

Lloyds Bank Foundation, South Asian Women’s Pilot Project launched.

2013 – 2018

We launched Chances for All Project for South Asian women through the National Lottery Community Fund.

2015

We became Equality Action

2016 – 2021

Improving Lives (Men’s Project) through the National Lottery Community Fund.

2018 – 2023

Positive Minds Project (working with women) with help from the National Lottery Community Fund

2021 – 2025

Vita Minds Project – NHS Talking Therapies funding by the Vita Health Group

2022 - 2024

Lloyds Bank Foundation grant reviewed our strategic, communications and funding strategies.

2024 - 2028

Secured our EmpowHer Project backed by the National Lottery Community Fund.
